Bad Bunny for Easter; an ICON caricature print

Happy Easter y’all! I hope everyone is knee deep in chocolate and fending off rapidly reproducing animals of all types. For Easter I decided to draw a cartoon portrait of Puerto Rican latin hiphop artist and one of the biggest selling musical artists in the world today, Bad Bunny.

I first heard the naughty rabbit himself when my girlfriend and I were travelling through Central America and we added Becky G’s song ‘Mayores’, which Bunny guested on, to our addictive songs playlist. I think the banging Cardi B song ‘I Like It’ came out as we were coming back to blighty too so my girlfriend in particular got immersed in his hiphop/reggaeton world, and we also loved ‘Krippy Kush’! Check it out— https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1_JW7An2l0

Anyway as well as being such a massive star he’s an LGBTQ ally and a style icon too. My favourite of his looks is a talking cactus in a recent SNL sketch ‘Loco’ that made everyone in our house crease up. Check it out!

For this caricature print I went with yellow for the face again as a light colour is great for showing detail, dark blue for the 2nd colour and red for the background. I particularly enjoyed the highlight patterns on his shirt and the cool shaven shapes in his hair.
It’s fun to caricature someone who is so creative with their style choices, and in fact without those mad styles he may not be so recognisable! As you can see from the stage by stage development pics I start with the shape of the face in pencil, making sure I’m happy with the lines before erasing unnecessary lines which would show up through the colour. I the add the blocks of colour in as clean a way as possible. Finally I add highlights with my white POSCA PC-1M and lowlight lines with my Uni pin fineline 0.3. Contact me using one of my homepage buttons to ask about purchasing the original of the print.

The end result is a pretty faithful(if not colour-wise!) portrait caricature. After this ICONS series of caricature prints of big musical stars from various eras I plan to draw some more experimental and exaggerated caricature portraits of some of my personal musical heroes like Captain Beefheart and Icy Spicy Leoncie. I figure I have a little bit more time before events come back, why not experiment and see if anyone likes it. It’s been an unpleasant year, but one positive has been the honing of my caricaturist craft for commissions and hey, you never know when I might go back to it.

In the meantime if you are in need of a Birmingham based caricaturist that can travel throughout the West Midlands and the wider UK, and who is an experienced events entertainer, book me why not? As you’ll see on my website’s reviews I am a 5-star kinda guy ;).

What’s your favourite Bad Bunny tune?
